Obituary for April Ferguson

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I - I took the one less travelled by, And that has made all the difference”

It is with immense sadness that we, the family, announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister & friend Shirley April Ferguson. April left this world Friday, August 18th, 2023 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by her adoring family.

Born on April 13th, 1964, in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, April was a loving, kind, caring, and selfless individual.

She took pride in caring for others. April always found her way to the baseball fields as a young girl where she would eventually meet the love of her life, Kenneth Ferguson. After playing phone tag in their teenage years, they reconnected in their 20s, fell in love and got married. April and Kenny share two beautiful children, Stephen and Sarah, whom they love beyond measures. April took great pride in being a mother.

April was a champion for animals and people with intellectual disabilities. April dedicated 30 years to her career at Resi-Care. She was highly admired by residents whom she treated as if they were her own children. April found great joy in taking care of others and was always known for giving you “the shirt off her back” April was always happy, if her loved ones were happy.

April is survived by her mother, Joyce Boutilier; her devoted, loving husband, Kenneth G. Ferguson; children, Stephen Ferguson and Sarah Cromwell (Bradley); fur children, Rudy and Apollo; and her three grandchildren whom she loved beyond measures, Sawyer Ferguson, Kensley Cromwell and Walker Cromwell. April also leaves behind her four sisters, Gail Sheppard (Robert), Barbra Jean (Billy), Anita Boutilier (Lewis), and Winnie MacNeil (Gerald); brother, Darryl Boutilier (Heather); brothers-in-law, Kevin and Paul Ferguson; her special aunt, Kaye York (Tommy); and many nieces and nephews. April will be especially missed by her sister and best friend, Winnie MacNeil. There was never an April without her Winnie.

April was predeceased by her father, Henry Sr. Boutilier; father and mother in-law, Ewen and Ruth Ferguson; brothers, Henry Boutilier and Edison Boutilier; uncle, Tommy York; her beloved fur children. Lady-Bugs and Buddy; niece, Lynda Boutilier; and brother in-law, Gerald MacNeil.

Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 25th, 2023 at 4 p.m. in Sydney Memorial Chapel, Sydney, Nova Scotia, with Reverend Myrna MacMullin officiating.  A private family burial will held in Dutch Brook Cemetery at a later date.

Mom, you will be missed beyond words. You were a light in the world that shined like no other. You were our guiding light, our fierce protector, and our conscience (good and bad). Your courageous fight to stay present with us throughout the entirety of this was inspirational.

Your strong spiritual beliefs leave us with some sort of comfort knowing you’ll be watching over us, protecting us like you always have. “Our body is just a shell, our soul has no gender, live and let die”

April, mom, nana, “ma” we love you to the moon and back. Until we see you again.

Because of April’s undeniable love for animals, we ask that you please make a donation to your local SPCA in honour of her.
